While 2009 was the 150th Anniversary of Alleghany County, it was also the kick-off of the Alleghany Quilters  Guild’s, ‘Barn Quilt Trails’ Alleghany Quilters are following the lead of an Ohio family who honored their quilter mother by painting a quilt pattern and hanging it on their barn. More than 79 brightly painted “Barn Quilts” are beautifying the highways and county roads in Alleghany. The Alleghany project is based on similar projects across the U.S. bringing together groups of folks to create works of beauty, highlighting our heritage and culture.

The Alleghany Quilters dedicated this project in memory of their quilter friends who have passed on before them. This project is funded by the Alleghany Quilters Guild, grants from the Alleghany Arts Council, the NC Arts Council’s Grassroots Grant program, the Alleghany Community Foundation and numerous individual donations.
